Biographical Information

My research interests include the use of the outdoors for educational and behavior change, gendered journeys in the outdoor prfession and the development of relationships with the natural world.

My passions are my students, my family and being active in the outdoors.

For the past seven years I have been involved in a sport of development program in Baucau in Timor Leste. The Future in Youth (FIY) program is a capapacity building program that aims to bring health, wellbeing and lifeskills to the youth community of Timor Leste. This program is supported by ACU and involves Exercise students from ACU working with the youth in Baucau to run a  soccer coaching program. For more information search FIY on the university website.

I have been awarded an ALTC citation, for outstanding contribution to student learning.  This national award recognised my " sustained commitment to excellence in the development and teaching of innovative curricula which utlise outdoor environments as a powerful medium for student learning".

My research areas include:

  • Gendered journeys in the outdoor profession
  • The use of arts based methods for collecting stories
  • Developing connections with the natural environment and the role Outdoor Education programs might have in developing these relationship and future sustainable behaviour.
  •  Socail capacity building through sport in Timor Leste
  • The use of outdoor wildness medicine scenarios and case studies as an effective clinical placement alternative for paramedic students.
  • The use on concept maps in the delivery of Outdoor Education programs.
  • Examining the importance of focusing on 'risk benefit' alongside risk management systems for safe and effective outdoor program delivery
  • Evaluation of Outdoor Education programs for adolescence in the school setting as well as in the field of adventure therapy particularly with adolescence who are 'at risk'.

I am a fellow of the Australian Council for Physical Education Recreation ( ACHPER)
