My research historicises the experiences of marginalised social groups in Australia in the twentieth century. I have conducted several research projects examining the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in the Australian armed forces, particularly in the Second World War and post-Second World War eras. Through these projects I have researched topics including the role of women, racism and commemorations of Indigenous service. I have also conducted transnational research, looking at Native American military service as a point of comparison with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences.

One of my ongoing projects is examining the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex service personnel in the Australian armed forces post-Second World War. This project, entitled 'Serving in Silence? LGBTI Military Service in Australia since 1945', is working in partnership with the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives and Defence LGBTI Information Service (DEFGLIS).

Finally, I have recently commenced new project on the history of transgender Australians since the early twentieth century. The project focuses especially on the personal experiences of gender diverse people and intentionally centres their stories and perspectives in the contemporary era, while looking to media, the law and medicine for trans histories before living memory.

Research project 1: "Serving in Silence? LGBTI Military Service in Australia since 1945"

This project aims to investigate how the Australian armed forces have grappled with changing social attitudes towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people from the end of World War Two until the present. The project plans to analyse why in some eras the Australian military has been an international leader in facilitating social change, while at other times it has lagged behind civilian norms. It aims to reveal the untold experiences of LGBTI personnel, the processes of change to policies and practices, and wider cultural shifts around sexuality and gender. The expected project outcomes will inform current debates about Australian Defence Force culture and wider questions about how institutions respond to social change.

Research project 2: "Transgender Australians: The History of an Identity"

This project aims to trace the emergence of transgender identities in Australia since the early twentieth century. Using oral histories, archives and media, the project intends to analyse the shifting medical, legal, cultural and popular discourses about transgender people, as well as study how evolving societal attitudes have affected the lives of gender diverse people. By revealing transgender people's histories, the project will explore the ways gender diverse Australians have expressed their identities amidst changing social norms. The expected outcomes will inform current debates about transgender rights, healthcare provision and social inclusion.
