Biographical Information

Associate Professor Michael T Buchanan is a member of the Faculty of Theology & Philosophy and immediate past Editor of Religious Education Journal of Australia. He has extensive educational experience in secondary schools and his areas of curriculum expertise include: Religious Education, Legal Studies, History, Middle School Commerce and Teaching English to Speakers of Languages (TESOL). He has also held senior leadership positions in Administration, Religious and Faith Leadership.

Michael is passionate about student achievement through holistic engagement and deep learning and this fervour underpins his research agenda. He has national and international publications exploring key areas pertaining to the advancement of student learning including reflective practice through peer review, curriculum leadership and leadership in faith-based schools. With a specific research focus on religious education he has published extensively on curriculum change and curriculum leadership and its implications for religious education and education in general.

Michaels other research interests include, teacher formation and the role of teachers in faith based schools, as well as the role of such schools in secular societies. He is also interested in various dimensions of school leadership (educational, curriculum, spiritual, ministerial, spiritual and faith) and the interplay between leadership and learning. His most recent research is concerned with learning for leadership and the formation principals and deputy principal, as well as other key leaders in faith based schools.

Michael holds a tenured position as a research fellow at York St John University, York, United Kingdom and is a visiting scholar at the University of Malta where he has worked closely with Dr Adrian Gellel. In Malta he was invited to critique the core national curriculum document entitled Religious Education in Malta (2008, Archdiocese of Malta, Secretariat for Catechesis). This document was pivotal in that it steered the future directions of religious education in Catholic and State schools in Malta. He has also been invited several times to address the leaders and aspiring leaders of Catholic primary and secondary schools in Malta and Gozo regarding leadership in schools. He has also undertaken a comparative research study exploring the impact of cultural and religious values upon pre-service teachers&rsquo perceptions of their role as educators in Malta and Australia. The results of the study were published in 2011 in Journal of Beliefs and Values.

Michael is a member of the International Seminar on Religious Education and Values and holds the position on the Program Committee and a Board member of Malita Theologic and Religious Education Journal of Australia.
