Master's thesis: What's at stake when researchers talk to the media
Abstract: Public understanding of science is a contentious issue among researchers and journalists. One side of the debate argues that researchers don&rsquot know how to translate their findings into simple accessible information for the general public. The other side argues that journalists dumb down research. This research aims to answer: What is at stake when a researcher talks to a journalist: for the researcher, for their organisation and for policy development? These questions are framed in the terms of communication: Who is communicating? What are they communicating? Who are they communicating to? Why? And the questions examine the specific experiences of social scientists who work for a nonprofit research organisation. Media engagement is also examined in the context of its potential effect on policy development. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with six professional researchers.
